Discovery

Discovery

The team had a strong understanding of what we were building from day one. During the time of this project, Cuemath was repositioning itself to be more engaging to increase learning outcomes. We needed a revamped game interface that could serve every grade of students ranging from KG to grade 10.

Goals

Goals

We had three primary goals:

  1. Improve the experience of game serving interface.

  2. Unify the scoring criteria to reduce complexities while keep it scalable for other games.

  3. Provide a seamless experience across current gameplays that we have and the new ones.

Design Concept

Design Concept

Ideating on the right theme for grabbing kids’ attention and make them want to play regularly was a challenge. We discussed multiple ideas around the same and finalised the space theme considering the potential for scaling.

We designed and developed planets for each game categories.

Animated Planets

The game content is categorised into 4 main categories and within a category there are multiple packs and within a pack, there are multiple threads.

It is analogous to the Subject -> Chapter -> Topic -> Sub-topic. Since the structure has already been defined, it was one among the constraints for the design process.

Introducing Streaks

We added a new feature of daily streaks inorder to push the students towards playing Math Gym on a regular basis. The above visuals show the different states of streak feature.

The engineers and I sat down to explore how we could achieve an optimally delightful animation for streak.

Scoring

Scoring

Post game screens & progress

In the legacy version, the scoring was not simple and straightforward. Since scoring was something that multiple people had worked on different contexts, it was a mix and match of criterion.

We unified the scoring and made it a single score which is calculated based on the speed, accuracy and time of attempt of the student.

Also, we decided to show the progress of the student in each topic in order to keep them informed as well as provide motivation for completion of the topic. This inturn could increase the retention as well.

Iterations

Iterations

On progress screens

After designing the progress screens, we ran a user testing session and collected the feedback from the students as well as their parents. We go to know that the colour theme used was not so delightful for kids.

Based on the feedback, we reiterated the progress related screens. The redesigned version is given below. We have boosted the colours in the screens and made it move visually appealing for kids. Introducing the new colours was a great success. It was accepted by the students and parents unanimously.

Unification

We had six existing gameplays which were designed independently. In order to unify and bring consistency to the game play designs, we decided to redesign them.

Since the types were fixed but are used to serve contents for all the topics, the obvious choice was to play with the backgrounds. It will make the gameplays dynamic and interesting. Since we have different planets for each packs, games will look different on its own.

To serve the functional purpose, the outer layer of game structure has been retained by us. They were polished with the new UI style while keeping the structure intact.

We then continued to measure success through experimentation and various metrics like feature adoption, we got to know that the redesign has increased the retention by 24%.

New Gameplays

New Gameplays

We have introduced new game plays to increase the game types in an attempt to reduce monotonousity in the games.

Drag & drop, Ordering and grouping were the new types. You can see the screens below.

Added UI changes and celebration on streaks of correct answers to increase the delight while playing the games.
